Fear escalates everything. When people assume anything unexplained must be malevolent, every creak becomes a threat. A calmer approach is to set clear, respectful boundaries — and to remember that this is your home.
Speak plainly and calmly
Many families find it helpful to state, out loud, what is and isn't welcome: that the home belongs to the living people who share it, and that disruptions aren't acceptable. Tone matters — firm, not frightened.
Create routines of peace
- Keep lights, music and conversation in shared spaces.
- Maintain regular cleaning and fresh air.
- Use whatever spiritual or faith practices are meaningful to your household.
- Avoid provoking or 'challenging' anything — that's not a boundary.
Take care of the people first
Sleep, stress and grief shape how we experience a space. Supporting the wellbeing of everyone in the house is part of restoring peace to it.
